Bay Area Hip Hop: 10/29/11 to 11/4/11
Audio Pick: Moe Green ft. Amy Serrata- Dreamin’

Vallejo’s Moe Green has managed to gain the support of national hip hop magazines and blogs, something that only a handful of Bay Area rappers have been able to do in recent years. This may be attributed to his universal style. If it wasn’t for the numerous Vallejo references in his songs, it would be difficult to pinpoint where he was from. Moe Green is a dreamer, and he describes a couple of his dreams on “Dreamin’”, a track off Lionheart which he released this past Summer. He raps about providing a better place to live for his mom and being successful in music so he could leave a job he hates. As he mentions on the track, he has only got his feet wet, but he seems to be going on the right path to make it happen.
“Dreamin’” also features Amy Serrata, whose vocals are a nice addition to the Bedrock produced track. Two other tracks we recommend from Moe Green’s latest project are “Deja Vu” and “Iced Out Lifestyle”. The video for the latter track was one of the best Bay Area videos from 2010 and can be viewed below.
“Fuck rappin’ bout your money tree
I’m planting seeds for the Garden Of Eden
Smiles and handshakes but these broads deceivin’
Lost in the land of niggas ballin and thievin’
Dreams I ain’t reached yet I’m gettin’ my feet wet
Puttin’ on for my city you remember the V, yep
Call me what you want, Moe Greenery
I’m super high off life no greenery
I wanna get my mom brand new scenery
She don’t need to live like this but she livin’
Pops hate his job and I hate mine too
We both tryin’ to figure out what these Pro Tools do
So I’m writing, and writing, reciting bout my lifestyle
I’m living life but I want the life right now
Soundtrack to the soul of a huster
Play around with my dreams, muthafuckem”- Moe Green

San Francisco’s Yarrow Slaps, who just released “Toast II Grind“, is already working on his next mixtape called “Searchin”. Today we get to premiere a sample of what we will hear on his upcoming tape with “My Style Go”, a freestyle over a Nem270 beat. On the track, Yarrow Slaps raps about what some may call his swag, over a dance friendly beat. Don’t mistake Yarrow Slaps for just another rapper who likes to brag about himself on every track. In fact, the majority of music I’ve heard from him the past year is deep and from the heart, as evidenced below.

Audio Pick: A-1 ft. Chantelle Tibbs- On My Way (Exposition)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
A-1 is a rapper from San Francisco’s Mission district. His latest release, “The Book Of Adam“, was the first project I heard from the relatively new MC. Having previously only seen one of his videos, I had no idea what to expect. As the first track, “On My Way (Exposition)” started playing, I thought to myself, ok, this guy can rap. As the song played on, A-1 continued to impress me with the content of his lyrics. Whereas some rappers put together creative punchlines that have little or no relation to the lines before, A-1 created a song where the lyrics flow perfectly to convey the message of the track.
The track starts off with A-1 describing what he was told about how he should live his life once he turned 18. The description is of the typical path people are encouraged to take, starting with college, then leading to a job, a marriage, and then having kids. He goes on to say that he’ll probably end up doing it, but for now he want’s to see how far he can get with music. He concludes his verse by responding to people telling him to think about what he’s gonna be by saying that he has, and what he wants is to be happy.
This song alone has me interested in seeing how far A-1 will take his music career, and if you’re a regular reader of thebayisback.com, you’ll be able to follow his music on this site going forward. Even if you’re not feeling this track, I suggest you check out “The Book Of Adam” because no two songs sound alike. This one has the feel of something that could have been on one of Kanye West’s early albums. Other tracks sound more like something off a Fabolous album. A couple of tracks we recommend are “My Name Is Adam” and “You Say (Pimps)”.
“When I turned 18, everybody told me
You better start thinking bout what u gon’ be
A doctor, a lawyer, you can go see
About college then follow with a good J-O-B
Cuz you don’t wanna be another triple OG
On the corner talkin bout he could’ve flipped a whole key
If he never would’ve got ?? by the police, so
Trust me, you can be
Employee of the month if you work hard put in OT
Stack your cheese, stack your pay
And when it get humdrum ask for a raise
Get enough sick days to raise a family
Find a nice lady, you’re one and only
Have a few babies, your first born seed”- A-1
Video Pick: Mike-Dash-E ft. Viveca Hawkins- Get Off Me
Mike-Dash-E has been pushing his music real hard the past couple of years. The Hercules rapper has dropped several free projects and finally released his debut solo album, “Dash With Me“, this past Spring. He has been all over YouTube, releasing half a dozen music videos for his album along with other promo videos. His grind was rewarded with a spot on the Bay Area Freshmen 10 list of 2011. He clearly has a love for hip hop, which is evident in his music and how much he is investing in himself. “Dash With Me” shows different sides of the Filipino rapper. There are songs about his passion for hip hop, his hustle and relationships along with some radio friendly party songs.
A highlight on the album is the D-Animals produced “Get Off Me”, which features Viveca Hawkins. The song is an emotional message from Mike-Dash-E to a woman he is in a relationship with. It expresses the feelings that come with a relationship that has reached its breaking point. Mike-Dash-E struggles to let go of what they once had, even though the relationship has been going in a downward spiral. The video was Directed by Aris Jerome and takes us through a day full of drama that resulted in the woman packing up and leaving. It concludes with a heart broken Mike-Dash-E remembering the good times from the past. The story was put together brilliantly and featured amazing acting performances from everyone involved. This is definitely a top 10 video so far this year.
“All the fights stressing, thought we was progressing
Instead of moving up we plummet down in direction
Thought it was perfection, together it was bliss
Now it seems like everything we do is in abyss
No celebrations, barely any patience
Swear we had it all now the memories are racing
Time moving fast, still I’m holding on
Cuz something deep inside wont believe that this is gone
You sayin’ that I’m wrong, but baby what is right
And if you say it’s pride I will let it go tonight
I’m putting up a fight for your love, is it working
Besides all the music you the one that I let first in”- Mike-Dash-E
