Review:
Nump, most known for his regional hit I Gott Grapes, dropped his second album on Sick Wid It Records this October with “Student Ov Da Game”. Reading the biography on his myspace page provides insight on where this title may have came from, as he was behind the scenes mixing tracks for some of the Bay Area’s most popular artists for a while. I’m not sure how this compares to his previous solo, but Nump will need to study some more before he reaches the level he wants as an artist.
The introduction track is promising, with Nump sounding hungry and dedicated to success. The next track is the single from the album, Legalize My Medicine. His medicine, of course, is the grapes he rapped about several years ago. “My daily medication makes me feel rejuvenation, so quit hating on the way I gets my inspiration”, he demands. Michael Phelps is about chains. Saying “we got more gold ’round the neck than Michael Phelps” is a nice line, but it’s difficult to make an interesting song entirely about chains. Tap Out features Paul Wall and is intended to get your girl in the mood. A nice beat and hook by Decadez make this a successful track. Decadez is also on the next track, So Good, which is a smoking anthem featuring B-Legit, Laroo, Berner, Cellski & Willie Joe.
Gottstahavit features Balance and a hypnotizing beat. The rappers rhyme about the things they need in their lives. Hi Skool High is a track half the students I went to high school with could relate to. It has a solid underground sounding style and beat. Nump does a good job of telling his story on My Loved Ones. Walkin Fashion Statement has a hot beat. The robotic sounding hook works and Ya Boy delivers some slick rhymes on the track. Body Like has a beat that will make you want to move. It reminds of the production Federation was rapping over in 2005.
“Student Ov Da Game” is full of good tracks and Nump is a better rapper than I expected. The problem is that it is too long, with 20 tracks. The large variety in the types of beats on this album ruin the flow. Nump tries to appeal to every type of audience, which means everyone should find some songs they like on here, but also some songs they dislike. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but if Nump want’s to drop an album that is highly acclaimed, he should have a consistent vibe like most classic album of the past.
