Review:
This was easily the most anticipated Bay Area release of 2009. After releasing a classic album in 2005 with “The Jack Artist”, fans were eager to see if his new solo would be on the same level in terms of quality. With four years between official albums, expectations were high, and Jacka must have felt the pressure. Although it was not quite on the same level as the Jack Artist, it is still the best Bay Area album to drop in the first half of 2009.
The thing that Jacka does best is put out thought provoking street music that doesn’t sound like the thousands of other songs on similar topics. Lines like “whole family hungry but all I bring home is hope” and “they like me rappin, when I’m trappin I’m a real nightmare” are solid examples of what kind of lyrics you’ll get on this album. The production on this album has a different sound than his previous solo. Still, almost all the beats are great. He did go with more producers this time around, which made it a bit less cohesive.
One of the main criticisms about this album is the number of features. All the features were just as good as Jacka on Jack Artist. This time around, the features were hit and miss, but they didn’t take away much from the quality.
Highlights on this album include Summer, They Don’t Know, Dream, Wont Be Right, Dopest Forreal, Callin My Name, Our Heroes, and others. If you ask 10 people what their favorite song on this album is, you may get 6 different answers. After playing this album every day for over a week, I only skip “Just A Celebrity” and “All Over Me” cuz I played it out months ago. 17-18 solid tracks earn Tear Gas a solid rating.
Overall Rating: 4.5/5
